GLOBAL CAMPAIGNS

Angola

Background

Angola is extremely vulnerable to climate change impacts such as prolonged droughts and damaging flash floods. Impacted sectors are agriculture: coastal zone; land-use, forest, ecosystem and biodiversity; water resources; and health.  Adaptation actions in these key sectors are prioritized in Angola’s Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (2015). On mitigation, Angola committed to unconditionally reduce up to 35% of its GHG emissions by 2030. It also agreed to a conditional mitigation target – an additional 15 percent reduction –making Angola’s commitment one of the most ambitious of the 195 countries that signed the document at the 21st UNFCCC (2015).

Road to Net Zero

Since ratifying the Paris Agreement, Angola has developed a national development plan, established a climate observatory, and implemented a national emissions monitoring system. Additionally, the country has set a five-year goal to reduce carbon intensity in the production of electricity by developing hydro-electric plants to produce 78% of country’s electricity.

The Net Zero Angola campaign, will bring local and global actors together to place Climate Change at the core economic development. Through a series of virtual events, hosted in rotation with  partners, the  campaign will showcase initiatives, case-studies and interventions contributing towards Angola’s Net Zero targets.

Race to Zero: Mitigation

Race to Zero: Adaptation

Driving this fundamental change across all sectors of the economy entails instantaneous action from businesses, the local community, and the Angolan government. The government will support decarbonization activities by implementing strategies and legal frameworks to steer the country towards its Net Zero target. Collectively, Angola can win the Net Zero race.
